I’m particularly drawn towards working with children who have experienced trauma in their lives as well as adults who have experienced childhood trauma. I have a deep desire to help people who are stuck in their lives because of something that happened to them; may it be abuse, neglect, or any other kind of trauma. I enjoy seeing people become a better version of themselves after going through trauma healing.
I’m also drawn toward people with extreme and complex traumas from situations such as childhood trauma in the face of parental absence or organized abuse.
Trauma therapy can seem daunting because you might not be sure what pace the processing will go through. I am taking your lead on that; I’m not going faster than you and I’m also here to help and challenge you if you need me to.
In working with children, I use toys and other expressive elements so that children can express how they feel by simply ‘playing it out’. Especially young children often don’t have the capacity quite yet to talk about their feelings and experience, but they already know how to play. Very often kids will use play to convey what they experience and also find help in being able to change the situation by playing.
In our first session we will look at what brought you to counselling including a personal history, development, and symptoms you might be struggling with. We’ll also talk about what goals or hopes you might have for counselling. You’re also welcome to ask me any questions you might have.
After that, I am focused only on you and your experiences. We work on what you want to work on and I will come along and provide you with reflections and tools. When you’re ready to do trauma work, we’ll choose the interventions together and continue to take it at your own pace.
In working with children, the first session is reserved for just the caregiver(s) so that we can freely talk about what concerns you might have about your child including their history and hopes you have for them. The second session starts with caregiver(s) and child. After that the child gets to decide what they want to do and what they want to play with.
