Play Therapy for Children
Helping children express, explore, and heal — through play
Children don’t always have the words to describe what they are feeling or what they’ve been through. Play therapy offers a developmentally appropriate way for children to communicate, process emotions, and make sense of their experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
At Treehouse Trauma Centre, play is not “just play.” It is a powerful therapeutic tool that allows children to express themselves naturally, at their own pace, and in ways that feel safe and engaging.
What is play therapy?
Play therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses play, creativity, and imagination to help children express thoughts and feelings they may not yet be able to put into words. Toys, games, art materials, and storytelling become the language through which children communicate.
Rather than asking children to talk directly about difficult experiences, play therapy meets them where they are developmentally — allowing healing to unfold through action, imagination, and connection.
Our approach at Treehouse Trauma Centre
Our therapists are trained in trauma-informed and child-centred approaches. Sessions may include the use of sand trays, art materials, games, figurines, movement, and imaginative play. These tools allow children to explore emotions and experiences without pressure or expectation.
When appropriate, play therapy is gently integrated with other trauma-informed modalities to support deeper healing — always guided by the child’s readiness and sense of safety.
We also value collaboration with caregivers. Parents and guardians may be involved through check-ins or consultations to help support the child’s growth outside of sessions.
